Welcome to the “11th Globis Cup World Go U-22 Championship.”
After a temporary hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are delighted to resume the “Globis Cup” for the first time in three years.
This tournament was established in 2014 with the aim of providing young Japanese players an opportunity to compete against the world’s top players of their generation and to win on the global stage. Having been held 10 consecutive times, the Globis Cup has now become a gateway to success for young Go players worldwide.
A major factor in our decision to resume the tournament was the remarkable victory of Ryo Ichiriki, the tournament’s inaugural champion, at the “Ing Cup”—the world’s premier Go tournament, held every four years like the Olympics. Additionally, female Go player Asami Ueno has also achieved victory in a world-class tournament. Furthermore, the various professional titles are currently dominated by players who have participated in the Globis Cup, and we are truly seeing the fruits of our efforts in nurturing young talent.
Now in its 11th year, the tournament brings together young talents selected from Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Europe, North America, and Asia-Oceania to compete in intense matches. As the young players who will lead the next generation take on the world and hone their skills through friendly competition, I am already filled with anticipation to see what legendary matches will unfold on the board and what new history will be made.
I have high hopes that the Globis Cup will continue to contribute to the development of young Japanese Go players and help them maintain a winning streak on the global stage. I sincerely hope that the excitement of this tournament will expand the circle of Go enthusiasts and lead to the further development of the Go world as a whole.
